After two consecutive wins in the Premier League, the confidence levels were at a high ahead Arsenal’s trip to Anfield. However, the result was as disappointing as it has been in recent years. Joel Matip’s opener followed by a brace from Mo Salah gave the hosts all three points but Unai Emery’s plan seemed to work quite well.

Arsenal became compact without the ball and overloaded the central areas of the pitch which forced Liverpool to go wide. Their two full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are arguably the best in the league and giving them so much space was indeed a huge risk.

However, that worked in our favour as Klopp’s side failed to come up with anything convincing in our box. Liverpool clearly dominated the possession in the first half but Arsenal looked more dangerous thanks to the two huge chances.

Adrian’s howler almost gifted Aubameyang the opener while Nicolas Pepe stole the ball off Henderson to go one on one with the goalkeeper but only to strike the ball straight at him.

Two goals from set-pieces cost us the game

If Arsenal had converted those two chances, the story could have been completely different. Joel Matip’s opener proved to be a tough blow, especially after how hard they had worked to contain Liverpool till that point.

Tactically, Emery did a brilliant job against a side who are unbeaten at home for over 40 games. His ploy to absorb the pressure before putting through either Aubameyang or Pepe through on the counter-attack would have worked on another day. However, conceding two goals from a corner and a penalty respectively was slightly beyond his control.

With the North London Derby coming up at the Emirates, we can expect to see a much more adventurous Arsenal side. Spurs have been incredibly poor in their opening few games and Arsenal are definitely the favourites going into the game.
