Liverpool showed Arsenal why they are the Premier League champions last night. The Reds were a level above us and thoroughly deserved to win the game, but we should take a few positives from the way we played at times.
Mikel Arteta will review the game with the squad and there were a lot of things we could have done better. However, we stayed in the game until their third goal, and on another day, we could well have come away with a point.
With the transfer window coming to an end next week, Arsenal will have to get their deals over the line. We already know that Thomas Partey (Telegraph) and Houssem Aouar (RMC) are our priority targets, but the current financial climate makes it difficult for us to sign both of them.
Partey or Aouar, who should Arsenal sign?
Arteta might just have to settle for just one of them. It is a very difficult choice considering that both players would make a huge difference to our squad. However, last night’s performance showed exactly who the Arsenal boss should prioritise in this window.
The Gunners lacked creativity for most parts of the game. Dani Ceballos’ introduction helped cause Liverpool a few problems, but apart from that, we weren’t at all a threat to the reigning Premier League champions.
This has been a common theme for quite some time now. Arsenal have created just five big chances in the Premier League so far this season. We have attempted just 24 shots, only West Bromwich Albion have had fewer after three games. (PremierLeague.com)
Arsenal’s attack is as good as any on their day, but they are having to do everything on their own at the moment. Mesut Ozil would be a brilliant option now, but the German seems to have played his last game for the club.
That makes the need for a new number 10 a massive priority, and Aouar is the man for the job. The Frenchman can drive with the ball into the final third and has the vision to open up the opposition’s defence with his passing.
Partey would undoubtedly be a fantastic addition as well, but if we can only get one, it has to be Aouar.
