According to a report from the Daily Mail, Arsenal are considering Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo to replace Unai Emery.
Emery’s dismissal is imminent now after a string of poor results and big names have been linked with the job. Nuno Santo is the latest and the report reveals that he is our leading target.
The Portuguese has done a remarkable job at Wolves over the last two years. He led the side to the Premier League from the Championship and finished seventh in their first season back. Wolves have been a menace to the big teams since their return and Santo deserves all the credit for that.
However, the Arsenal job is much bigger than what he has experienced before and there are a number of reasons why he should not be the man to take for from Emery.
Nuno’s philosophy will be a problem:
Apart from the results, Arsenal fans’ biggest criticism of Emery has been his style of play. Counter-attacking football hasn’t gone down well at the Emirates and with Santo, we will get exactly that if he is to be appointed.
Santo’s defence at Wolves has been his biggest asset. His three central defenders are capable of withstanding an enormous amount of pressure before breaking quickly to hurt teams on the counter-attack.
Arsenal’s defenders aren’t quite used to sitting deep and inviting pressure and forcing that will not end well. As important as defensive stability is, a manager has to play to the team’s strengths and ours is our attack.
The Gunners need an attack-minded manager who is not afraid to take risks in the final third. As good as Santo is, he is not the man to play beautiful, attacking football and that will again lead to discontent among fans irrespective of the results.
