Arsenal are set to announce Mikel Arteta as their new head coach. The Spaniard will leave his position as Manchester City’s assistant manager to become Unai Emery’s permanent successor at the Emirates.
A number of fans and pundits have been critical of Arsenal’s choice. Arteta has zero experience as a manager of a football club which has become a cause for concern but that only makes his appointment more exciting.
Arteta’s philosophy as a manager is anybody’s guess at this point. Will he follow Pep Guardiola’s successful system after working with him for three years? Or will he go with Arsene Wenger’s style after playing over 100 games under him?
The Spaniard might surprise everybody and come in with his own style which makes it incredibly exciting for Arsenal fans. A change in manager will, of course, not guarantee immediate success but with Arteta’s experience as a player, he will only have a positive impact on the youngsters.
Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock and Lucas Torreira couldn’t have asked for a better mentor to learn from. Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Reiss Nelson can improve massively just like Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling did under Arteta at Manchester City.
As big a gamble as it is, the Gunners are right to take it. The Spaniard will need time and money in the transfer window to turn things around. Arteta should be given everything he needs and the board should not interfere with his future at least till the end of next season.
The unknown quantity that Arteta will bring to Arsenal is hugely exciting and fans should patiently back him.
