Are we ever happy with Arsenal’s activity in the transfer window? The answer on most occasions is no. The business in last month’s window seems to have irked a number of fans again but we should be really happy with how it ended.
Arsenal completed loan deals for Pablo Mari from Flamengo and Cedric Soares from Southampton. Neither of them are jaw-dropping signings who will change the fate of our season but there is a lot to like about both of them.
Here are three reasons why Arsenal fans should be delighted with our transfer business:
At the time of signing Mari, Arsenal were without Calum Chambers, David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi. The latter two are now fully available but the Flamengo man’s arrival gives Arteta more options should there be any more casualties.
Cedric, on the other hand, is a very impressive addition. Ainsley Maitland-Niles can finally return to his natural central midfield position and Hector Bellerin gets some much-needed competition.
The Portuguese international defender is also capable of playing at left-back which is a real bonus for us considering our injury problems in that part of the pitch.
Low risk, high reward:
Arsenal really have nothing to lose with either of the two signings. Both deals will cost us less than £10 million including wages and if they don’t work out, they can be sent back to where they came from at the end of the season.
However, if the two do perform, Arsenal will have the chance to pull off incredible deals in the summer. Cedric will be available for free while Mari will cost no more than £8 million in six months time.
Mikel Arteta would have preferred a world-class defender to sort everything out immediately. However, he knows that January is a difficult window and as a result, he will be delighted with the additions of Mari and Cedric.
