Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi spoke to The Mirror about Mikel Arteta and how he has made the players’ life easier since his appointment.
The Spaniard has certainly boosted the morale of the players and the fans over the last four weeks. Arsenal have lost just once since Arteta’s arrival and there is a huge sense of optimism around the club.
The draw against Sheffield United was hard to take considering how good the performance was for most parts. Mustafi, a surprise inclusion on Saturday, played incredibly well and the German put his performance down to the influence of the new Arsenal boss.
He said: “It is not tennis when everyone can do whatever they want. Just because you have 11 or 18 individually good players does not mean it is going to work. This is the way we can perform only when someone like him comes in and tells us exactly what he wants and stick to the plan – it makes everything a lot easier.”
Were Emery’s instructions unclear?
The players certainly seem to have a clearer understanding of their role since Arteta’s arrival. However, this does raise question marks over the instructions that the players received from Emery during his time in charge.
Did the players fail to understand Emery’s messages or was enough not communicated by the former PSG boss? Emery’s communication skills were questioned time and again during his stint at the club and if Mustafi’s words are anything to go by, that could well have been the reason for his downfall.
Arsenal look a lot better under Arteta and it is time that the results reflect the performances. A tough away trip to Chelsea is next and considering the Blues’ struggles recently, Arteta and his men have a brilliant chance to close the gap between themselves and the top four.
