According to a report from Greek outlet Sportime, Sokratis could leave Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Unai Emery signed the Greek international from Borussia Dortmund for £18 million which was quite a bargain back then. (Guardian) Sokratis has had his ups and downs since his arrival but he has slowly dropped down the pecking order.

Mikel Arteta has been using him at right-back recently due to Hector Bellerin’s fitness problems. David Luiz, Pablo Mari and Shkodran Mustafi are all above Sokratis in the pecking order at the moment.

Rob Holding and Calum Chambers, when fully fit, are likely to push the Greek down the pecking order as well which makes life incredibly difficult for him.

However, Arteta was full of praise for him after our recent win against Portsmouth in the FA Cup.

He said: “For certain games, he is very helpful and he always has the right attitude and he has the qualities to play there in essential moments when we need him.” (Metro)

Papa is still good enough to play in Europe:

Sokratis is still a fantastic defender on his day and is someone who has given his all for us. However, football is cruel at times and this one of those cases. The Greek could well be the first defender out of the door in the summer.

The report claims that a return to Germany is on the cards for Sokratis but a lucrative offer from America or Saudi Arabia could sway him away from the continent as well.

The Greek international is still more than capable of playing in one of Europe’s top leagues. Arsenal could still make some good money off his sale and the same can be reinvested into what looks like a thin summer transfer budget.
