A few months ago, Arsenal were in a real spot of bother with respect to their players’ contracts. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka were attracting a lot of interest as they had just a year left on their existing deals. Gabriel Martinelli was also linked to big clubs, but the Gunners sorted it all out.

Aubameyang, Saka and Martinelli have all been tied down to long-term deals at the club. The Gunners’ big issue now is with Mesut Ozil, but that looks like it’s not going to end any time soon. The next problem for us with respect to contracts is with Alexandre Lacazette.

The Frenchman has less than two years left on his current deal. He is one of our most valuable players, and the Gunners will have to come to a decision quickly. Many expected Arsenal’s next move behind the scenes to be for Lacazette, but it looks like Edu and co had other ideas.

Football London claim today that Arsenal tried to extend Shkodran Mustafi’s contract in the summer. The German joined us in the summer of 2016 from Valencia for a fee in excess of £35 million. (BBC)

He started his Arsenal career in fantastic fashion but things turned sour. A number of mistakes and a ton of criticism from a section of the fanbase and the media cost him his confidence, and it looked like his time at the Emirates had come to an end.

However, Mikel Arteta’s arrival gave him a new lease of life. Mustafi played regularly under Arteta and was fantastic until he got injured. The German won over the fans again, and many expected him to play regularly when he was back fit.

Mustafi returned to action last night and was partly responsible for Jamie Vardy’s goal. That again irked a section of our fanbase, and many want him out again. Sadly, those supporters are set to get their wish.

The report claims that Mustafi has rejected Arsenal’s contract offer and has made it clear that he wants to leave the club at the end of this season.

Financially, that is a massive blow for the Gunners.

Yes, Mustafi can be a liability at times, yes, we have a better defender in Gabriel now and yes, we have enough cover if he leaves. But, he is on the final year of his contract and Arsenal will lose him for absolutely nothing after forking out over £35 million in 2016.
